The designs so meticulously translated by India’s weavers and artisans into
beautiful rugs are inspired by a myriad of sources -- from formal, classic Persian
patterns to rich medieval tapestries to the latest trends in modern art. All prospective
designs are rendered in full color, and carefully reviewed by both the rug importer
and manufacturer. The selected designs are turned over to specially trained artists
who draw them in full scale on graph paper, and color in every tiny square, each
of which represents a hand-tied knot of yarn. The completed graph drawing is then
passed on to the team of weavers assigned to the project.
